How Does Your Metabolism Work?

Metabolism is the process of converting food (calories) into energy. The efficiency at which your body does this is referred to as your metabolic rate.

Many factors affect your metabolic rate, including weight, age, body composition, hormone levels, and gender.

Your metabolic rate is measurement by analyzing the amount of oxygen your body uses and the amount of carbon dioxide your body produces.

The energy your metabolism produces is used to keep your organs and tissues working properly.

Why You Should Know Your Metabolic Health Rate

Learning about your metabolism will help you understand what you need to do to lose weight and why your prior attempts to lose weight were so frustrating.

Understanding your body’s unique metabolic rate empowers you to customize your weight loss or maintenance program around your specific needs so you can shatter the plateaus you've experienced before.

Getting the precise information you need to reach your goals helps you reach them sooner and with less effort.

A metabolic test is like having a compass during your weight loss journey because 'knowing' is better than 'guessing' when you need help losing or keeping off weight.

Remember, you're not the problem. The problem is the problem, and until you learn how your body processes food, you may have a difficult time losing weight, or keeping it off.

What Can a Metabolic Rate Test tell Me?

The results of a Resting Metabolic Rate test can tell your Dietitian if you have an increased or decreased metabolism.

This information can be used to determine the amount of calories you need to eat each day to maintain or lose weight and your Dietitian will use this information when making recommendations.

How is a Resting Metabolic Test Performed?

Metabolic tests are taken by one of our health care specialists at any of our PAIC locations.

During the test you will be asked to relax comfortably in a chair while you breath into a tube from your mouth.

The test takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Once the test is completed, your Dietitian will review your results and use the information to prepare your nutrition plan.

How to Prepare for the Test

  • DO NOT eat or drink anything except water for four hours before the test.

  • Avoid all products that contain caffeine for 24 hours before the test. In general, caffeine is found in coffee, tea, colas and other soft drinks, most chocolate products, as well as strawberries (these contain a small amount of caffeine), as caffeine will interfere with the results of the test.

  • Also avoid decaffeinated or caffeine-free products for 24 hours before the test as they contain trace amounts of caffeine.

  • Do not exercise or perform any vigorous physical activity on the day of your test.
